A Series of Palette Knife Paintings

Favorite Flow Blue Pitcher, Pomegranates & Pear, With Brass Pitcher (Rearrangement #4) 9x12 ©CWMundy
A fun and experimental series of 9×12 paintings, all done “from life” with palette knife and use of color !
(Rearrangement #1) The first in the series !
(Rearrangement #2) Switched to a different brass teapot.
(Rearrangement #3) Switched the brass Dutch teapot for a copper one,
and mixed a fresh batch of “pot color”, working the complimentaries, with a
warm light lime green background against a warm pink tabletop.
(Rearrangement #4) What would happen when I scumbled with Kleenex and soft edged certain things
with my Rosemary Brushes long flat Mongoose? It’s the softer side of the previous (3) 9×12′s.
Experimentation brings on growth and passion !!!
(Rearrangement #5) The last in this palette knife series, all done “from life” as usual.

New “Upside Down” Paintings
I drew Raking The Fields in on the canvas right side up, then turned both the canvas and the photo upside down, held the photo in my hand, painted in the shapes on the canvas. I then turned it rightside up, and made corrections and placed detail where needed. The majority of my work is “from life” but when it’s a situation where the subject will not pose for you, you have little choice. To paint this from life, you’d have to wait until it came around the field each time with 10 minute intervals.
And regarding July Sunset…This 20×16 “upside downer” was inspired by Dennis Sheehan’s work, especially sunsets, and also conversations with Dan Gerhartz. This is not an actual scene, I made it all up….I drew it from my imagination rightside up, then painted it upside down, then corrected it rightside up to make it believable. It’s all about the mood. Thank you Dennis and Dan for your inspiration…you guys are awesome !

Gallery 1261 Group Show Opens Tonight !
Gallery 1261 Group Exhibition opening tonight !
Jun 17 – Jul 23, 2011
The Indiana Heritage Arts 2011 Exhibit
Indiana Heritage Arts Annual Exhibition
June 11-25th, Brown County Art Gallery, One Artist Drive, Nashville, IN.
(812) 988-0099
http://www.browncountyartgallery.org/indiana/2011show.html
Exhibit open until June 25, 2011.
This year, the show was juried and prizes selected by Judge Kathryn Stats of
Salt Lake City, Utah.
Judge Stats selected a painting by C.W. Mundy as the IHA
Gold Prize Winner, an Impressionist oil called “Creek Near Story.”
C.W.’s statement :
“Having looked at the list of artists juried into the 2011 show, I realized what a talented and creative group of artists we have in our state. It is quite an honor for me to be juried into this high quality exhibition and then to win such a nice award.
Regarding the technique of this particular painting, it was the first of several paintings, in which I experimented with scrubbing in a tonal value with a 1 & 1/2 inch house paint brush… then laying color with a combination of palette knife and mongoose brushes. My intention was to build a strong centrality of focus in a landscape with value and edges to
“guide the eye”.
I’m so grateful to the Lord for giving me this desire to create!
Thank you to all the I.H.A. board for your hard work, to the judge for her efforts to jury and judge, and to all my fellow artists for your encouragement to me and for your passion to create.”

Portrait #12 – Portrait of An Artist
CW Mundy’s portrait #12, continuing his series of portraits, working toward “50″.
If there’s such a thing as “looking like an artist”, Wille Faust has that look ! See Wille’s extraordinary and creative art on his website.
Fresh Inspiration
CW ’s new inspiration and adventure - trying his hand at portraits. And his goal is “50 heads” mostly ”from Life”, to see what improvements are possible.
Here are #8 and #9, painted from his own photos. Just 41 more to go !
CW’s recently read books that have inspired - Sherrie McGraw’s The Language of Drawing and David Leffel’s An Artist Teaches and lots of books on Rembrandt… Also conversations with Dan Gerhartz and studying his beautiful book Not Far From Home .
CW plans to take a day workshop on drawing at Weekend With The Masters and attending the panel discussions and lectures on painting from life and other important topics. What an opportunity to study portraits and drawing with some of these tremendous painters ! Check out the schedule at their website…..Weekend With The Masters in September in Monterey, California!
Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame
This painting, done by C. W. in the mid – 1980′s, is of former I.U. basketball player Steve Alford (36×24, acrylic on canvas). The painting was recently donated by art collector Steve Pfenninger to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame has a collection of early sports illustration work by CW Mundy. (See paintings hanging in the conference room in the background.)
See more of C.W.’s sports illustration career (1970- 1990) at the National Art Museum of Sport in Indianapolis.
Some New Paintings
These traditional methods of paintmaking ensure the purity of color and lush consistency, enabling us to impart the secret of the Old Masters to the modern day painter. ”
CW Mundy And Friends…and Vasari Oil Colors
